The Spanish city of Salamanca is said to be one of the most spectacular Renaissance cities in Europe and has lots of history and interesting sites to see. Where is Salamanca?
Salamanca is a city situated in central Western Spain and is 212 kilometres (132 miles) north-west of Madrid. This is not a huge city with a population of around 160,000 people, but has everything you need. It’s the capital of the province of Salamanca, in the Castilla y Leon region.
A Roman Bridge, Historic Cathedrals, and a House of Shells in Salamanca!
Salamanca has a good number of attractions to visit in between your foreign language school classes, and it’s a really beautiful city. Said to be one of the finest Renaissance cities in Europe there’s a lot of great architecture to see here such as the Old and New Cathedrals, right next door to each other. The old one dates from the 12th century while the new one was built over the course of three centuries from the 16th century.
There are many ornate university buildings to see dotted around the city too, plus the interesting House of Shells built in the 15th century and featuring 350 sandstone shells on the walls. There is also the Roman bridge over the River Tormes which still has 15 Roman origin arches. Salamanca is nicknamed the Golden City because of all the sandstone buildings that have taken on a golden hue over hundreds of years.

Shopping is a popular pastime in the city and there are some great shops with lots of variety if you enjoy shopping. The Plaza Mayor is the best place to meet up with your friends for drinks, a meal, or a night out. This large square is the heart of the city and there are many excellent bars and restaurants on the square itself and on the streets extending out from the square. Language travel students find this to be a fun and vibrant place to meet!
Experience the Festivals of Salamanca
Two popular festivals in Salamanca are Water Monday (Lunes de Aguas), after Easter, and the Fiesta of the Virgen de la Vega in September. If you’re studying at a foreign language school during these times try to experience these festivals.
