Cardiff - Study Abroad in Wales and Learn English
Language travel students looking to study English abroad should give Cardiff a lot of consideration. The capital of Wales is a vibrant and fun city and a great alternative to many larger English-speaking cities.
Study Abroad in Cardiff, the Capital of Wales!
Cardiff, the capital of Wales, has really grown in popularity as a tourist destination and as a study abroad destination over the last few years. Cardiff is now the most popular place in Wales, attracting many thousands of visitors per year, a number which shows there’s a lot going for this city!
Where is Cardiff?
Cardiff is in Wales, a country which forms part of the United Kingdom. The city is situated in the south east of Wales, on the coast of the Bristol Channel. Compared to London, Cardiff has a very low population with around 318,000 people living here. This is good for language travel students though because Cardiff is a big city but not so big that you’d get lost in it!
History, Shopping and More in Cardiff!
Cardiff has a good range of attractions for tourists and language students alike. This is an ancient city which was first established in 75 AD with the building of a Roman fort. Many years later, in 1091, the old Roman fort was developed further into what’s now Cardiff Castle. The castle is one of the city’s top visitor attractions.
Other attractions include another castle, on the outskirts, called Castell Coch, plus the ancient Llandaff Cathedral and a number of museums. Cardiff Bay has been redeveloped and is now one of the city’s hotspots with its bars, restaurants and cafés, plus some shops, but for real shopping visit the attractive Victorian shopping arcades and the main shopping streets which are full of famous names.
Enjoy Culture and Sports When You Study Abroad in Cardiff!
As well as being the capital city of Wales, Cardiff is also the country’s cultural capital and is host to many events (see below). Although Welsh is the indigenous language, English is most widely spoken and used so you’ll rarely hear Welsh being spoken in Cardiff.
Watch a Major Sporting Event in Cardiff
Cardiff has become a prominent city for major sporting events, especially since the Millennium Stadium was built. Rugby Union is very popular in Cardiff, so why not catch a match here and soak in the city’s atmosphere whilst you’re attending one of the city’s foreign language schools?!
Concerts, Events and More in Cardiff
When there aren’t sporting events being held at the Millennium Stadium you may be lucky to find a big name pop or rock star performing here! Cardiff has many other events on throughout the year. March 1st is the St David’s Day Parade, and the most popular event is ‘The Big Weekend’ held at the end of July. Language travel students will really enjoy the carnival atmosphere!
