Study Abroad in Hawaii, the Aloha State!

With 2,000 miles (3,200km) of the Pacific Ocean separating Hawaii from the USA it’s easy to forget that Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States. What this does mean is that English is the official language here, making this a great alternative to the mainland if you want to study abroad in the USA.

Where is Hawaii?

Hawaii is a group of 19 volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean. As mentioned above, the islands are around 2,000 miles away from the coast of the western edge of the USA, and although they’ve been a state since 1959, Hawaii still has its own individual personality. There are eight islands that are larger than the rest, and all but two of these are open to tourism. And compared to most of the other US states Hawaii has quite a low population at around 1.3 million.

Catch the Surf in Hawaii!

Hawaii is famous around the world for being one of the world’s best surfing destinations, so whether you’re a pro or you’re looking to try surfing for the first time this is a great place to do it! The beaches are perfect for relaxing on, or use them as a springboard into those high waves. The main three islands for tourism and for foreign language courses are Hawaii, Oahu and Maui. The island of Hawaii (often called The Big Island) is the largest of them all and is home to spectacular scenery as seen in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Oahu is the third largest island but has the most people and the famous city of Honolulu. Make sure you spend some time on Waikiki Beach! Finally there’s Maui, famous for its varied landscapes that include vineyards, rainforests, mountains, and coasts.

Enjoy the Culture when you Study Abroad in Hawaii

Hawaii may be part of the USA but there’s still a great deal of culture to be discovered here. When you’re studying a language immersion program this is a great time to really immerse yourself in the culture, which is a mix of American and traditional Hawaiian. Things like the foods and the customs take a blend of both, so this is a really interesting place to visit!

Traditional Hawaiian Luau

One thing you really can’t miss when you study abroad in Hawaii is a traditional Hawaiian luau. These are frequently put on for the tourists and feature Hawaiian foods, music, and of course hula! You’ll get to try some great cuisine including lots of seafood.

Year Round Tropical Climate in Hawaii

With the tropical climate you can enjoy attending a study abroad program at any time of the year here in Hawaii. Temperatures don’t vary too much across the year, staying nice and warm, or between the different islands, but at certain times of the year Hawaii does have rainfall, and this rainy season does vary between destinations.
