Language travel students will definitely find that Montreal is a great choice for a study abroad program.
Where is Montreal?
Montreal is situated in the province of Quebec, in Canada. It is in the far south east of Quebec, about 275 kilometres (168 miles) south of Quebec City. The city is quite interesting in that it’s actually located on an island called the Island of Montreal, where the two rivers, the St Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers meet. Montreal is a large city, and has the second largest population in Canada at around 1.6 million.
Visit the Beautiful Old City of Montreal and the Modern Downtown
Montreal is a very popular city, both with leisure tourists and language travel students, and the Old City of Montreal is the top attraction. Built between the 17th and 19th centuries, the old city features impressive architecture such as the famous Basilique Notre-Dame. Eat, drink, shop and soak up the ambiance on Place Jacques-Cartier, and enjoy a walk around the Old Port.
From old to new, Montreal also has a modern and lively downtown area too. The Underground City is great during the winter as miles of passageways links shopping malls, entertainment and more. Also during the winter you can ice skate or go skiing nearby. Chinese language travel students will feel particularly at home in Montreal’s Chinatown, home to one of Canada’s largest Asian communities.
Montreal is a Unique Destination to Study English Abroad!
The official language of Montreal is actually French, but English is the first language for many people, and even those who speak French still understand and can communicate in English too. This makes Montreal quite a unique city if you’re looking to study English abroad. The whole city has quite a European feel to it, and is different in many ways to other Canadian cities, but then this is part of Montreal’s charm.
Enjoy Exciting Sports in Montreal!
Montreal has many sports that language travel students can participate in, or watch. Ice hockey is very popular here, and the NHL team is the Montreal Canadiens. It’s a real experience watching a fast-paced professional hockey game! There’s also the Canadian Football League (similar to American Football) which the Montreal Alouettes play in, and of course Montreal was the location for the 1976 Winter Olympics.
Try Montreal’s Unique Cuisine!
Language travel students will never get bored eating out in Montreal! It’s got one of the highest number of restaurants in the world, serving huge varieties of cuisines as a result of the different nationalities who have made Montreal their home over the years.
