Where is Beijing?

Beijing means ‘Northern Capital’, and it’s so named because the city is situated in the north east of China. Beijing is the capital city of China, and also the second largest city in the country. It’s a huge place with over 17 million people living in the Municipality and around 12 million living just in the Metro area. One thing is for sure, you’ll never get lonely if you study abroad in Beijing!

See the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square When You Study Abroad in Beijing!

Being such a huge city there are countless things to see and do so there’s not much chance of you getting bored here in Beijing. As a language travel student you can join the thousands of other tourists visiting the city and head first for the most popular attractions. The Forbidden City is a spectacular place and is full of history. 980 buildings still survive within the city walls, all of which was built as the Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The famous Tiananmen Square is just outside the Forbidden City, plus other great places to visit include the Temple of Heaven and the peaceful park which surrounds it, and the ruins and grounds of the Summer Palace. If you and your language travel friends fancy a day trip the Great Wall of China is only 1.5 hours away!

Study Abroad in China and Develop a Love For Chinese Food!

Beijing was once a city full of ‘hutongs’ (narrow alley-like streets lined with homes), though these are now unfortunately disappearing and being replaced with modern, large apartment blocks. Here are still some areas where these exist, and a visit is highly recommended to get a ‘real’ feel for Chinese culture!

Try the Local Cuisine Specialities in Beijing!

Chinese food can be found in just about every country around the world, in some form or another, but if you’ve never tried it, now’s your big chance! What better place to try Chinese food than in China itself?! The local type of cuisine is called Mandarin and probably the most well known dish is Peking Roast Duck. Drinking traditional Chinese tea is very popular in Beijing too!

Learn Mandarin Chinese in Beijing!

In Beijing the language spoken is known as Beijing dialect. This is a Mandarin subdivision of spoken Chinese. Learning this dialect will benefit language travel students because the Beijing dialect is the basis for Standard Mandarin, and this in turn is the language which is used on mainland China as well as in Singapore and Taiwan.
