Students who wish to enter high school but don’t have the necessary language skills should enrol on a high school preparation course. These not only teach you language skills, but life skills too.
High school preparation courses are courses which have been designed to assist foreign language students with the preparation required to enter high school in a different country. These are particularly popular for entry to high schools based in Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
If you’re of high school age and are moving to a country where the first language is not your native language, making sure you can succeed at high school is very important. You could enrol on a general language course to help you with your language skills, but a specific high school preparation course is really the best option.
Most obviously a high school preparation course will teach you language skills, but what makes it different to a general language course is all the additional aspects. A well structured high school preparation course will also include the following:
- Teach you about what life at high school in that country is really like so that you know what to expect
- Give you the skills to communicate effectively with your new teachers
- Give you the skills to be able to interact on the same level with your new classmates
- Help you to understand language which is specific to certain high school subjects
- Teach you how to carry out research independently so that you can succeed in individual projects
- Teach you how to work with others as part of a group
These are just some of the elements that might be included in a good high school preparation course though of course the structure is bound to vary a little from language school to language school.
High school preparation courses are suitable for students who are of high school age, or coming up to high school age. The actual age you start high school varies from country to country, and even varies between the regions of those countries, but as a guide you would start high school at around age 11 or 12.
Language schools will usually offer high school preparation courses to suit students at different levels, so even if you have no knowledge of the language you can attend a course, all the way up to advanced level. The duration of the course will obviously vary on your starting level, though usually would be a minimum of 4 to 5 weeks, and anything up to 40 weeks.
