When you want to learn a foreign language there are numerous options available to you, but for many students the most effective and fulfilling method is language immersion, i.e. studying abroad. What some students don’t realise is that there are also different language immersion programs to consider too – the most obvious is a foreign language school, but have you considered language immersion at a teacher’s home?
Language immersion at a teacher’s home is exactly as it sounds – rather than the more common type of foreign language course which is studied at a language school, with this program you actually stay at the teacher’s home and have lessons with them there. This will usually be one-to-one, i.e. just you and the teacher, though sometimes this type of immersion is booked with a friend, so you and your friend will both stay at the teacher’s home and have lessons together.
There are several major benefits to this type of language immersion program. First is the fact that you are being fully immersed. Not only will you have lessons at the teacher’s home but you will be living there too, so this means you’ll be having meals with the teacher and his or her family (if they have a family). This would give you a similar experience to staying with a host family, but because you’re staying with your teacher there is even more opportunity to learn the language effectively.
Another big advantage is the fact that you will be privately taught. This means the teacher can give you far more attention than they could if you were in a class with say 15 other language travel students at a school. So again this means you should be able to learn the language more effectively.
Language immersion at a teacher’s home can be quite a different experience to studying abroad in a language school. Whilst some students will get on very well studying a foreign language in this way, other students may find this method of learning a little too intense.
You should also consider the fact that you won’t have as much opportunity to make friends and enjoy the social side of study abroad if you’re not attending a language school. Finally there’s the cost. This is usually the most expensive type of language immersion, so may be too pricey for some students, but if you’re willing to pay more the results are usually worth the money!
Some teacher’s may offer this service directly to students, but we think it’s more advisable to arrange this through a language school. A number of language schools offer language immersion at a teacher’s home in addition to their standard lessons. Although problems are unlikely to arise, if you arrange your program through a language school you’re better covered if they do.
