    Tips

There’s a lot to consider when you’re thinking of studying a language abroad. We have some top tips and recommendations for potential language students, including how to choose the right study abroad destination for you.

If your language study abroad journey is only just beginning, you’re going to be feeling a little nervous and worried about what’s ahead of you – don’t worry, this is how everyone feels at first!

Taking the plunge and deciding to learn a language abroad is a big step after all, and it takes guts! Study abroad may not be for everyone, but if you’re reading this then you must be seriously considering it!

You’re going to have to make some decisions before getting on a plane, and there’s going to be lots to prepare before you can start your language program. Here are some great tips and recommendations to bear in mind and to help you on your way.

    Research

Research is something that you can never do too much of! It’s so important that you research and try to find out as much as you possibly can before you make a final decision on studying abroad.

    Which country?

Probably the most important thing to research is your destination, and this can be really great fun! First decide which country you would like to go and learn a language in. If you’re going to learn English you obviously want a country where English is the first language, and the top destinations for this are England, the USA, Canada and Australia. Although they have a common language, these countries are all unique and can offer you, as a language student, a very different experience. Choose the country which will really suit you best, and this will not necessarily be the one which all your friends choose!

    Where in the country?

Once you’ve chosen your study abroad country you’ll need to whittle this choice down to a city or a region within that country. England is pretty small, but Australia, Canada and the USA are very big countries so the decision may be more difficult! Consider whether you want the coast, mountains, a big city or a small city.

    What’s the weather like?

One thing that may influence your decision is the weather. Do some research into the climate so that you know what it will be like at the time of year you’re thinking of taking a language course, and remember, England, Canada and the USA are in the northern hemisphere so the best summer months are July and August, but Australia is in the southern hemisphere. This means that July and August is winter for Australians!

    Does it match my interests?

It’s all very well choosing your language program destination based on good weather, but remember that you’re not just going for a week’s holiday, you’re here longer term! For this reason, make sure you choose a language study destination which really matches your interests. We can’t emphasise just how important this is – if you can’t do the things you love doing you’re going to be unhappy and if you’re unhappy you’re not going to learn as much or have all the fun you should be having. Language study abroad is supposed to be a fun, happy and rewarding experience after all!
