Language school overview

Accreditations

International House New York is a University of Cambridge approved Teacher Training Center, and is approved by the New York State Department of Education as an ESL school.

Language School description

International House (IH) is one of the largest groups of language schools, teaching English and 25 modern languages in 150 schools in more than 50 countries worldwide since 1953. The International House World Organization (IHWO) is a network of language schools worldwide that are committed to implementing high standards of quality and innovation in education and training.

International House was founded in 1953 with the aim of providing an innovative approach to language teaching. The founders, John and Brita Haycraft, were themselves teachers who sought to promote international understanding through language learning and teacher training. Haycraft introduced the first training program for teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), which blended teaching theory and practice. This course, which was developed at International House, was the forerunner of the Cambridge ESOL Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

The International House World Organization is today made up of 150 schools in over 50 countries worldwide. Although these are independent businesses, they all share the same philosophy and teaching approach. The aims of International House remain essentially the same as in Haycraft's day, with a dedication to promoting international understanding through education and the raising of teacher-training standards worldwide.

There is so much to see and learn about New York, which makes it the perfect place for you to go out and make the most of your English. Examples of group excursions with IH New York:

  • In The Heights on Broadway - This Tony Award-winning musical comedy was written about the Spanish-speaking Washington Heights area of Upper Manhattan. If you love Broadway, this is the must-see show of 2009!
  • Circle Line boat cruise - This cruise down the Hudson River offers a stunning panoramic of the famed New York skyline and a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
  • Baseball at the new Yankee Stadium - Finished in 2009 and costing $1.5 billion, Yankee Stadium is an awe-inspiring place to watch New York's home team play. You'll be impressed even if you're not a fan of baseball.
  • Strawberry Fields walking tour - Take a tour of Central Park West near 72nd street to see the Dakota, the building where John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived and where Lennon was shot. Visit the Strawberry Fields Memorial to Lennon in Central Park. See the usual mourners and peace-lovers playing the guitar and laying flowers on the ground.

Taking classes at IH New York is about more than just studying English - it's about experiencing English in its entirety, and having fun while doing it!

I took the CPE exam at IH New York, and I am glad I did.
Since I could't attend the preparation course in NYC I took distant lessons to prepare for the exam. I spoke every week days for two months with my teacher to talk about my work and practice and also prepare for the Speaking Paper.
I have been very impressed by the professionalism and efficiency of the staffs at IH.
From the very first contact by e-mail until exam day every thing went very smoothly. Everyone has been incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and gave me invaluable advice. Thank you.
